Big games from Rapp, Mackinnon not enough in Portland’s 81-64 loss to CSU Bakersfield


PORTLAND, Ore. – Cal State Bakersfield drilled 12-of-19 three-pointers and shot 51 percent overall in an 81-64 win over Portland Wednesday at Chiles Center. Austin Rapp drilled six three-pointers and finished with 21 points and Max Mackinnon added 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Pilots (4-8).

Bol Dengdit also reached double figures for the Pilots with 11 points from the bench.

The Portland offense was very productive from deep, pouring in nine threes on 24 attempts. Rapp was the most prolific shooter for the Pilots, draining six treys in the contest.

Portland shot 43 percent overall and made 11-of-13 free throws but were outrebounded 36-22 and committed 14 turnovers while forcing just eight. The Roadrunners (6-6) gained a 21-9 edge in points off turnovers.

How It Happened

Portland struggled out of the gate as Bakersfield drilled their first three shot attempts to go ahead 8-0. The Roadrunners closed the first half with an 18-9 run and took a 46-35 lead into halftime.

Back-to-back layups from Jermaine Ballisager Webb cut the deficit to seven early in the second period before Bakersfield pushed the margin back to double digits on a three by Jemel Jones. The lead continued to grow down the stretch as the Roadrunners put the game away.

» Portland lit it up from three point land, knocking down nine treys in the game.

» Austin Rapp, Max Mackinnon, and Bol Dengdit combined to account for 77 percent of the Pilots points.

» The Portland bench came alive by scoring 32 points to its scoring output.

» Max Mackinnon and Bol Dengdit came off the bench to score 17 and 11 points, respectively.

» The Pilots were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.

» Austin Rapp led the Pilots with 21 points.

» Portland got a team-high six rebounds from Max Mackinnon.

» Portland leading scorer Vukasin Masic played just 11 minutes while battling illness.

» CJ Hardy led four Roadrunners in double figures with 22 points.

Up Next

Portland concludes non-league action with a Saturday doubleheader at Chiles Center. The Pilot men face Lafayette at 1 p.m. followed by the UP women versus Pacific at 3:30 p.m.
