The Warriors have been big-game hunting back since the start of the offseason. And ESPN’s front office expert Bobby Marks joined Willard and Dibs Wednesday to explain just what moves are possible for Golden State to make after acquiring Dennis Schroeder.
Marks mentioned that the obvious targets were Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram, but that the salaries there, especially Butler’s nearly $49 million cap hit, could be especially difficult to accommodate. That’s why Zion Williamson is a name that could make sense.
“I think why I talked about Zion, and I think the only reason for Golden State, if you go down that path, is if you’re not giving up much to do that,” Marks said. “And it’s because it’s based on his his injury history and the contract. His contract is one of the great contracts out there, because there’s no guarantees after this year. It’s non guaranteed for the next three years after here. So if you’re going out and pursuing him, then you know, then there’s less of a risk taking him on.”
Specifically, that deal would only make sense if Jonathan Kuminga is not involved.
“So I think Zion would make sense if you’re giving up a first-round pick and, maybe one or two players that matter,” Marks said. “Not giving up Jonathan Kuminga, not giving up, probably not even maybe Brandon Podziemski, as far as if it’s Wiggins and an expiring contract, then that maybe makes a little bit more sense. Because the risk is not there for you if you’re the Warriors.”
Marks clarified that he wasn’t saying Williamson was an easy get, but that if he does become available, he’s someone that the Warriors would only go for at a limited price. That would go for other teams, too.
