Chance the Rapper’s Wife Kirsten Corley Files for Divorce

Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley are going their separate ways.

On Friday, Dec. 13, Corley officially filed for divorce from the 31-year-old rapper, according to online court records viewed by PEOPLE. The filing comes eight months after the pair revealed in a joint statement that they had split.

TMZ was first to report the filing.

“After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways,” wrote the hip-hop star and his wife on Instagram in April. “We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.”

Chance and Corley share daughters Kensli, 9, and Marli, 5, though the court filing did not indicate if Corley was seeking child support in the divorce. In the estranged couple’s April statement, they wrote that they planned to co-parent their young children: “God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together.”

Chance — whose real name is Chancelor Bennett — first met his future wife at an office party with his mom at only 9 years old. The pair reconnected at the South by Southwest film festival in 2012, and started dating not long after.

In September 2015, the couple welcomed the first of their two children, daughter Kensli, but briefly split in 2016 when Corley filed a petition asking the Cook County Circuit Court to declare Chance the father and mandate he pay child support, according to the Chicago Tribune. Corley withdrew the filing in January 2017 after she and Chance reconciled, and the rapper thanked his wife and daughter as he accepted a Grammy award the next month.

And in 2018, Chance got down on one knee at a backyard Fourth of July party. “She said yes 🔗” the rapper posted to X (formerly Twitter) several hours after the proposal.

The pair tied the knot in March 2019 at a star-studded ceremony at a ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif., attended by several of Chance’s A-list friends, including Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Dave Chappelle.

“I knew I was gonna marry that girl,” Chance posted to X days before the ceremony, reminiscing on their first encounter. “Sixteen years later it’s happening. This wknd is the time, and the place is my wedding. I’m gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny.”

In August 2019, the pair welcomed a second daughter, Marli — which Corley announced with a photo of the newborn on Instagram. The rapper even postponed some of his upcoming tour, a decision he explained in a post on Instagram was so he could spend more time with his family, since he had missed several milestones with his elder daughter.

“At this point as a husband and father of two I realize that I can’t make that mistake again,” he wrote. “I need to be as helpful and available as possible to my wife in these early months of raising Kensli and Marli.”

In an April 2020 interview with PEOPLE, Chance said he was cherishing family time in quarantine with his two daughters — which had been filled with games, dancing, and cartoons together. “They make me laugh so often,” said the dad.
