MANDEVILLE, La. — Causeway authorities have closed Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge northbound and southbound due to a multiple-vehicle crash with injuries that injured sent 11 people to the hospital.
The closure happened around 9 a.m. during the Tuesday morning commute. At least 40-to-50 cars were involved in the incident.
Heavy fog was reported at the time of the incident. Causeway GM Carlton Dufrechou said that dense fog in the area likely contributed to the crash.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, at least 11 people were taken to the hospital following the crash on the southbound bridge. Initially Causeway officials expected to open the bridge by 12 p.m. However, work continued to perform cleanup and assess the damage. New estimates from officials say the bridge could be opened by 3:30 p.m.
