Top Democrat jabs Trump ally MTG over new ‘DOGE’ subcommittee

House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday scoffed at the new subcommittee being spearheaded by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Jeffries spoke with MSNBC’s Joy Reid about President-elect Donald Trump’s decision to tap entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and tech billionaire Elon Musk to co-lead the new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) in his new administration.

Reid pressed Jeffries on whether he would recommend that Democrats join the new “Delivering on Government Efficiency” (DOGE) Subcommittee that will be led by Greene next year.

Jeffries went on to say that the subcommittee was not a serious plan since it’s being led by Greene—one of Trump’s most outspoken allies in the House.

“We’ll have that internal discussion. But as I understand it, the person charged with executing this vision is Marjorie Taylor Greene. Are you kidding me? This is not a serious effort. When you put Marjorie Taylor Greene in charge, it speaks for itself,” he told Reid.

Trump tapped Ramaswamy and Musk to lead the non-governmental agency to recommend places where the government can reduce its size and spending, including slashing government programs and lifting regulations. The pair has indicated that they will recommend mass layoffs for federal employees and wants to require federal workers to work in-person.

A handful of Democrats have expressed optimism toward the endeavor spearheaded by the two businessmen. There’s also a new caucus, called the Congressional Delivering Outstanding Government Efficiency (DOGE) Caucus, that lawmakers can join as a counterpart to the new agency.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) became the first Democrat to join the DOGE caucus earlier this month. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have also expressed support for the effort.

Jeffries also said that he is prepared to “push back” if Ramaswamy and Musk propose making cuts to key government programs.

“Well, this is an area where we are prepared to aggressively push back, and we’ve made clear, listen, we will find bipartisan common ground with the incoming administration on any issue when it will make a difference in the lives of the American people, particularly as it relates to driving down the high cost of living in the United States of America. That’s a clear message that has emerged from this election,” he said.

“But at the same period of time, we’re going to push back against far right extremism, protect Social Security, protect Medicare, protect Medicaid, protect the Affordable Care Act, protect Head Start, protect efforts to undermine veterans benefits, and we will always protect the woman’s freedom to make her own reproductive healthcare decision,” he added.
