Shawn Mendes Seems to Address Rumored Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello Love Triangle

Shawn Mendes is opening up about a complicated time in his love life.

In a preview clip for his upcoming Thursday, Dec. 12 interview with John Mayer on the “New Light” singer’s SiriusXM show How’s Life, Mendes, 26, referenced a past love triangle.

“I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes told Mayer. “Maybe instead of two days it could have been two weeks.”

Mendes added, “The biggest lesson I’ve heard is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”

This narrative would align with the rumors that surrounded Mendes in early 2023. At the time, he was rumored to be dating Sabrina Carpenter, though he denied they were in a relationship. Around the same time, he was spotted rekindling his romance with ex Camila Cabello.

Though none of the parties involved have directly commented on the situation, many fans think Carpenter let her music do the talking with her hit song “Taste.”

The lyrics of the revenge track read: “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”

Then in September, fans speculated that Cabello, 27, was making a dig at Carpenter, 25, during her performance at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival while singing her and ex Mendes’ song “Señorita.”

“You say we’re just friends/But friends don’t know the way you…” Cabello sang, purposefully stopping before singing the next word “taste,” and instead putting a finger to her lips with a knowing look before continuing the song.

Cabello and Mendes first split in 2021 before briefly rekindling their romance in 2023.

“You’re just kind of like, it’s not a fit, it doesn’t feel right,” Cabello said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March of their second split. “And I think, luckily, I was in a place in my life where it took me less time to realize that. It took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right and we don’t need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good.’”

She continued, “I will always care about him and love him. He’s such a good person, and I’m lucky because some people have exes that are awful, and he is not. He’s a really kind, good person.”

Echoing the sentiment, Mendes praised Cabello during a September appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast.

“She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding and thoughtful and caring,” he said of the Fifth Harmony alum at the time. “So communicating with her is not difficult and that’s probably a huge part of it.”

As for Carpenter, the singer moved on to her romance with Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan, though a source confirmed to PEOPLE earlier this month that the former pair had split.

“They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break,” the insider said of Keoghan, 32, and Carpenter.
