CHICO, Calif. — The historic Bidwell mansion on the Esplanade, in Chico, erupted in flames early Wednesday morning.
According to the Chico Fire Battalion chief, a call came in about an illegal burn around 3:15 a.m. Officials say it’s unclear if an illegal burn sparked the fire or if the call came simply due to flames being seen.
Fire crews responded with five fire engines, officers and medics. and found the mansion engulfed in flames. Fire crews began defensive operations – not entering the building because of the risk of structure collapse.
It’s unclear if the building was vacant or if there were any injuries.
According to the Chico fire battalion chief, illegal burns are common and the cause is still under investigation.
For years, the Bidwell Mansion stood as a symbol of Chico’s history and has been undergoing restoration since earlier in the year.
